Taylor Swift could play Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic of the singer's life.

The 'Love Story' singer is hoping to take on the role of the legendary artist in the film adaptation of Sheila Weller's book Girls Like Us, which also centres on Carly Simon and Carole King, according to Variety.

Should Swift play Mitchell, it would be her first leading role in a big-screen drama. The singer previously appeared in the ensemble film Valentine's Day and voiced a character in The Lorax.

Midnight in Paris actress Alison Pill has been linked to the role of King, while a number of actresses have auditioned for the role of Simon.

The film is scheduled to start production later this year, with Katie Jacobs set to direct.

Swift recently said that she will never take on film roles that she is not "obsessed" with, saying it would be "unfair" to take roles from actors.
