John Mayer says Taylor Swift's 'Dear John' humiliated him

Tissue, please: John Mayer says he was humiliated after hearing Taylor Swift's "Dear John," a song on the country-pop star's 2010 album, "Speak Now," that fans believe was written about him.

"It made me feel terrible," Mayer says in the new issue of Rolling Stone, on newsstands Friday. "I'm pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do."

Swift and Mayer were romantically linked for a while before the song's release. His new album, "Born and Raised," is sitting atop the album charts for the second week in a row.

Swift hasn't confirmed who inspired "Dear John" but said during interviews while promoting "Speak Now" that everyone would know to whom the song was directed.

Last month during publicity rounds for "Born and Raised," Mayer admitted that he went into hiding in 2010 because he acted like an "idiot" when he shared intimate details with the news media about former flames Jennifer Aniston and Jessica Simpson.

"I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I'd already been dressed down," Mayer, 34, tells Rolling Stone. "I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you've ever been, someone kicked you even lower?"

And what about that "Dear John" line in which Swift, now 22, sings: "Don't you think I was too young to be messed with?"

"I don't want to go into that," Mayer says. "I will say as a songwriter that I think it's kind of cheap songwriting.

"I know she's the biggest thing in the world, and I'm not trying to sink anybody's ship, but I think it's abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, 'Wait till he gets a load of this!' "
