Soundtrack to The Hunger Games includes Taylor Swift, Decemberists, members of Arcade Fire

Though were still a few months away from the films premiere, can we all agree that 2012 is going to be the year of The Hunger Games? The much-buzzed-about adaptation of the hit young adult book series promises to turn a handful of stars into true A-listers (including star Jennifer Lawrence) and also seems ready to fill the young-people-overcoming-the-odds-in-a-fantasy-world void left by the lack of a new Harry Potter movie. Long story short, this thing is going to be bonkers.

Like any huge tentpole movie, it has to have a big soundtrack as accompaniment. Last week, Taylor Swift unveiled the albums first single Safe and Sound, a collaboration with the Civil Wars. Over the weekend, the remainder of the lineup got fleshed out a bit, with Universal announcing that the disc will also include contributions from the Decemberists and Win Butler & Regine Chassagne of Arcade Fire.

The soundtrack album, produced by T-Bone Burnett (fresh off his Oscar victory for his work on Crazy Heart), will also include vocal contributions from Lawrence herself on Rues Lullaby. (Since we got yelled at when we published that story about Lawrence singing, be warned that the previous link contains spoilers for a book that has been out since 2008.) Danny Elfman was originally supposed to co-create the score alongside Burnett, but scheduling conflicts prevented him from participating. James Newton Howard, who also replaced Elfman on The Gree! n Hornet , has taken the reigns in his stead. (And dont worry, Danny Elfman fans, as youll have Men in Black III and Dark Shadows to get your fix in 2012.)

The Hunger Games appears to be going for the Twilight model of soundtrack construction, finding the balance between mainstream headliners and stately indie favorites. That has worked out pretty well for that franchise, as the four Twilight movie soundtracks have combined to sell over four million copies worldwide.
