It was first reported in April that the 22-year-old singer hoped to take on the role, and now Variety confirms that Swift has signed on to play the folk singer on the big screen.

The film is an adaptation of Sheila Weller's 2008 book Girls Like Us, which chronicles the lives of Joni Mitchell, Carole King and Carly Simon and how they reshaped American music.

The roles of King and Simon have not yet been cast, however it has been reported that several actresses are testing for the roles.

Alison Pull, Olivia Thirlby, Zoe Kazan and Ari Graynor will test for the role of King, while insiders suggest that Girls star Allison Williams, Mad Men's Jessica Pare and Analeigh Tipton will read for Simon's role.

Country singer Swift has previously played a small part in the hit romantic comedy, Valentine's Day, alongside ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner and she also voiced a character in Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.
