Taylor Swift has invited one of her fans to attend the upcoming Academy of Country Music Awards with her.

The fan, Kevin McGuire, is an 18-year-old student from New Jersey, battling a relapse of leukaemia.

According to McGuire, he has been a long-time fan of Swift's. His older sister Victoria created a Facebook page earlier this week titled 'Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire To Prom!'

The page came to Swift's attention and she responded to McGuire via Facebook, saying: "Kevin, I'm so sorry but i won't be able to make it to your prom. But I was wondering, the ACM awards are coming up... would you be my date?"

McGuire, who is receiving treatment for the disease at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told the Courier-Post that the offer was "a lot better than the senior prom".

The Academy of Country Music Awards will take place April 1 in Las Vegas.

Swift, who recently performed at the Grammy Awards, stars in the upcoming movie The Lorax alongside Zac Efron.

She has made new music inspired by the film, and in an interview on Ellen did a duet with Efron to playfully deny romance rumours.
