Teen battling cancer hopes to land Taylor Swift as prom date

SOMERDALE, NJ (WECT) Recently, celebrities Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake accepted invitations to military balls by complete strangers. Now, one New Jersey high school senior is hoping that pop and country singer Taylor Swift will accept his invitation, too to be his prom date.

According to a Facebook event entitled, "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM!" Sterling High School student Kevin McGuire's sister Victoria explains he was diagnosed with Leukemia at just 13 years old.

From there, he endured chemotherapy, strong medications and other screenings, all while keeping his spirits high.

Even throughout his treatments, McGuire continued to play basketball and even varsity football as a freshman. McGuire reportedly beat his cancer in April 2010.

But now, McGuire is battling cancer once again after relapsing, and his friends and family think Taylor Swift would make the perfect prom date June 1.

"Kevin is the kindest, most noble 18 year old a person could even fathom meeting, and through out his ups and downs Kevin never even questioned "why me?" Nothing, and I mean NOTHING brightens Kevin's day more than Taylor Swift," wrote McGuire's sister on the Facebook event.

Additionally, McGuire's school prom already lands on an important day his birthday.

What started out as a relatively small concept seems to be taking the internet by storm. As of Thursday night, the event had gained more than 65,000 participants.

Swift is no stranger to helping others reach goals.

Two years ago, a pair of Auburn University students began a project called "A Hug From Taylor Swift," in which they set out to do anything possible to, well, get a hug from Taylor Swift.

When Swift learned about the project, she gave the men a set of tasks to complete via public YouTube videos, urging them to do various forms of volunteer work.

The students embarked on Swift's challenges, and on! ce compl eted, Swiftrewarded them with a performance at their college, and of course, big hugs.
