Taylor Swift, Prom Date for Teen With Cancer?

A Facebook campaign is urging country music megastar Taylor Swift to go the Sterling High School prom with a South Jersey teen who has leukemia.

On his birthday, June 1.

"It was my idea," said Victoria McGuire, sister of Kevin, who's at Children's Hospital dealing with a relapse.

When he talked about being unable to attend his school in Somerdale, Camden County, she said he could still go to the prom.

"He said, 'Who's going to want to go with me? I'm going to be bald,' " recalled Victoria, an education student at Rowan University.

"What if I got Taylor Swift to go with you?" she said.

"She's just his favorite singer, he refers to her as perfect, and I said, "I'll get your perfect girl for your prom."

She remembers the grin.

"It was the first time that I've seen him smile so big since he was in the hospital," she said.

So Victoria began with a Facebook page, "Taylor Swift take KEVIN MCGUIRE TO PROM!" and sent invites to her 200 Facebook friends.

Others have tried such celebrity invites before. Pop star / actor Justin Timberlake and actress Mila Kunis said yes, attending military balls. Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow has yet to answer a recent request.

Victoria's friends invited their friends, and so on, and, well, by Wednesday evening the story began hitting the national media.

Last night, 20,000 people had replied that they were "going."

This morning, it was more than 32,000.

No, wait, make that 33,000. (See: www.facebook.com/events/338272569549921.)

Victoria says the idea's not just about giving hope to her brother, who recently made media appearances to publicize a shortage of a chemo drug for leukemia.

Swift would like meeting Kevin, too.

"He's just such a nice kid. He's won like character awards at his school," she said. "It's not because of his cancer, it's how he handles it."

"Honestly, even if he didn't have cancer she sh! ould sti ll go to prom with him, because that's how good of a person he is," Victoria said.

Younger brother Michael is also cute, she said, talking about the trending on Twitter. (Check #teamKevin.)

No tweets or other ords so far about the invitation from Swift.

But Victoria is hopeful.

Swift has nothing planned that day.

At least according to her online calendar.

"Kevin did not deserve to get cancer again," Victoria said. "Something good has to come out of this for him. . . . It makes him feel so good that so many people are supporting him."
